Sailboat – User Manual
This is the user manual for the Brownell Boat Stand System as used with sailboats and other vessels that have a keel construction.
Figures 1 & 2
- We recommend using 6 or more stands.
- Begin by placing the stands an even distance from each other along the boat – see Figure 1.
- If the boat still has the rigging on, you will want to add an extra set of boat stands to ensure that the vessel remains safe in heavy winds.
- Utilize the large size keel stands or wooden keel support (block) below the front and back of the keel construction to ensure that the base is stable for the boat.
- We recommend using a small piece of plywood beneath each leg to prevent the leg from sinking, if the ground is loose in any way.
- Turn the boat stand until it points against the boat’s center line – see Figure 2.
Figures 3 & 4
- Place the boat stands for sailboats and vessels with keel construction with the adjustment screw in a straight 90-degree angle to the hull of the boat.
- Put the security chain in the small groove, and tighten by gently pulling the stand backwards.
- If one pair of your boat stands are placed facing the keel – or if the boat has a longer keel – pull the security chain below the keel and up on the other side.
- For additional stability at the bow, use a stand that has a V-top.
NOTE: Never tie your cover on the stand, as it might pull them both away in a heavy wind. Tie the cover independently.
Sailboats (Number & Size)
How Many Brownell Boat Stands for a Sailboat?
We recommend that you always use a minimum of 5 stands or more. The number of the stands that are recommended using the Brownell Boat Stand System are based upon the length of the boats. Sailboats that have the rigging in are suggested to use an extra pair of stands and if the boat is heavy in the bow or the stern, we recommend using an extra stand for support to reduce the amount of pressure on the hull.
NOTE: There is also a V-top model that is designed to fit the bow very well.
** Make sure that you have read and understand the Brownell Boat Stand System installation manual before you use our boat stands for sailboat storage.
Basic Recommendations:
- < 30 feet = 5 stands
- 30-40 feet = 7-9 stands
- 40-55 feet = 9-11 stands
- > 55 feet = 13 stands or more
There are 8 different sizes of boat stands for sailboats with up to a 13 foot draft. Adding the draft with the height of keel support, and subtracting 6 inches, you should have a number that would be best recommended. It is important to always try to have as much variation on both sides of the value in order to ensure better flexibility, based upon the ground and keel support height.

Powerboat – User Manual
Figures 1 & 2
- We recommend using 4 or more stands.
- Always use 2 or more keel stands or wooden keel support (blocks) for additional support below the boat’s center line.
- Place the keel stand or wooden block for the stern below the location of the engine to ensure good support and to reduce the amount of pressure on the hull.
- Make sure to use a keel stand or strong wood blocks as part of your overall Brownell Boat Stand System for your powerboat.
Figures 3 & 4
- Place the boat stands for powerboat storage as wide as possible for best stability.
- For powerboats that have a deep V bow construction, we recommend using Brownell sailboat stands (SB) at the bow.
- Put the security chain in the small groove, and tighten by gently pulling the stand backwards.
NOTE: Never tie your cover on the stand, as it might pull them both away in a heavy wind. Tie the cover independently.

How Many Brownell Boat Stands for a Powerboat?
We recommend that you always use a minimum of 4 stands or more for powerboats. There should always be 2 or more keel stands or wooden blocks (support) placed below the boat and the stern block or stand should be placed below the engine, as this is the part of the boat with the most weight. Powerboats that are larger than 33 feet should add 2 extra stands for support.
** Make sure that you have read and understand the Brownell Boat Stand System installation manual before you use our boat stands for powerboat storage.
Basic Recommendations:
- < 30 feet = 4 stands
- 30-45 feet = 6-8 stands
- 45-60 feet = 8-12 stands
- > 60 feet = 12 or more stands
There are 7 different sizes of boat stands for powerboats with a height up to 7 feet. The most important value that is used for calculation is the height from the ground to the angle where the hull changes from the vertical (side) to the horizontal (bottom). Adding this value with the wooden block support height, will give you a very close number for the height of the stand. It is important to always try to have as much variation on both sides of the value in order to ensure better flexibility, based upon the ground and keep support height.
Powerboats that have a sharp V bow construction should use Brownell sailboat stands (SB), as they will gain an extra advantage. The most common combination is to use the SB in the bow and the boat stands for powerboat (MB) storage in the stern.

- use safety chains on all sides of boat stands for sailboat storage, chaining the pairs together from port to starboard
- use pairs of boat stands with one placed to port and one placed to starboard

- use a V-stand under the bow of all fin keel construction or bow-heavy sailboats
- use a V-stand under the stern of fin keel construction or stern-heavy sailboats
- use boat stands of ground that is firm and stable or place plywood under stands of the ground is soft
- remove masts when boats are on stands in windy areas, however if the mast must be left in, use additional stands
- replace any boat stands that are damaged or badly rusted
- make sure that all screws are kept greased
- if a boat stand must be removed from underneath a boat, make sure to place another stand beside it first for support
- boat stands that are left on for long periods of time should be checked frequently for safety and security
DO NOT
- allow anyone that is not qualified, experienced or otherwise unauthorized to move or adjust the boat stands when in use
- use boat stands to suspend a boat in mid-air
- allow anything, such as a canvas or cover, to be tied to your boat stands
